Eucomis 'Purple Reign'
Eucomis 'Purple Reign'
Eucomis are tropical looking perennials from South Africa. Often called the "Pineapple Lily", their tall flower spike with a tufted top is quite reminiscent of an actual pineapple. This particular variety is hardy here in NJ when planted a full 6 inches below the soil. Expect a late rise from its winter nap, Eucomis is slow out of the gate.
Purple Reign is a compact version of the Proven Winners “Crowning Glory” group - meaning both foliage and flowers are a more manageable size for the average garden. At 18-20” tall, it is at least a foot shorter than others I have grown.
Purple Reign cannot be rushed, but as soon at that deep burgundy foliage pokes out of the ground you will be smitten. The foliage holds that deep color well into summer gradually changing to green as flowering begins. An inflorescence of star-shaped flowers opening blush pink and darkening to a deep mauve, last for many weeks. Honestly, it is quite Seussish in character and always an attention grabber.
