Walterss Gardens just introduced the first perennial fern to the Proven Winners lineup! I am a huge fan of painted ferns and this is a beauty ready to fill another of your shade needs. 'Crested Surf' looks a lot like the rest of the Japanese Painted Fern family, but the tips of these fronds are double crested - like little fringed tufts. They say it is a “vigorous, taller variety that can fit the middle of the border.” All painted ferns are pretty tough cookies so it will grow..however I can find no evidence to support the height claim. I’m looking forward to finding out - one can never have too many painted ferns! Perfect for moist, shady areas of the garden. A pinch of sun will brighten the coloring.
